Annotations. A beautiful creation that makes our life easier. We are using them for injection, serialization, and many other difficult things. The research from analyst SlashData shows that Flutter is now the most popular framework for cross-platform development, with 45% of developers choosing it over alternatives. Native performance, a single codebase for different platforms, null-safe development, increasing number of tools and integrations – that’s only a fraction of what Flutter offers to every developer. I think it is time for me to introduce you to Flutter!

As mobile developers, we often see the backend world as something magical that „does things”. But what if I tell you that you can easily build a backend even if mobile is your thing?

With this talk, I want to show how it is possible to bring your mobile knowledge (and shift it a little bit) to build a backend with Kotlin and Ktor. I will show how to structure the project, set up Dependency Injection, connect to a database and test everything to have a working backend ready to be deployed.

With the more and more mature market, the question of refactoring vs. rewrite will be only more and more common. I have faced it multiple times and let me share with you what worked really well, what is crucial to get right and what I would do differently next time.

This talk will touch on the most important parts of this decision process as well as execution in terms of rewrite/refactor, based on my experience and some well-known cases on the market.
